The buzz about the Jones Graduate School of Management is growing,
as shown by our increasing number of applicants. Last year, many
leading business schools experienced a decline in their applications.
Our applications, however, increased by 38 percent. This year’s
applications are up 30 percent over the number we had last year
at this time, so we expect another significant overall increase
this year.
This fall and winter’s MBA open houses have been packed with well-qualified
MBA and MBA for Executives candidates who come visit Rice to interact
with alumni, current students, and faculty. These are all signs
that we are going to have an exceptional entering class in fall
2001. Our goal is to increase the MBA class size to 160 and the
MBA for Executives class size to 55. These will also be the first
classes to graduate from the new building (scheduled to open in
summer 2002).
What does this mean to you as alumni? Well, it means you will have
a larger pool of candidates to choose from when looking for new
hires and interns for your companies. An increase in applications
shows recognition of the quality of the Jones School. Increased
applications, along with increases in other quantitative measures
used to evaluate our MBA program, position us to move up in the
rankings. Our friendly, intimate environment continues to be among
our many attractive qualities.
Our placement statistics for the Class of 2000 are spectacular.
The average salary of $77,000 combined with an average signing bonus
of $13,600 means that the average estimated total first -year compensation
for the Class of 2000 was $104,000. We have also hired a new director
of development, Maya Houston (MBA ’99), to lead the development
effort here at the Jones School. And, as we continue to recruit
students from all areas of the world, our alumni network is broadening
and strengthening with each graduation.
Thank you for all your help in communicating the message of the
Jones Graduate School’s significant strengths to your peers, coworkers,
friends, and family members. Our goal is to improve and as a result
continue to rise in the national rankings. Our ability to reach
this goal is truly tied to your sustained support. Alumni are our
best marketing tools and with your personal testaments to the quality
of education here at Rice, it is easy to spread the message that
the Jones School offers a business education that is second to none
— and one that creates networks and relationships that last for
life.
