Jones Partners Golf Tournament
– By Denton Dance, '01
David Frankfort ('01) and Denton Dance ('02), organizer of the tournament.

October’s Full Moon, Friday the 13th, was the day ofthe fifth Annual Jones Partners Golf Tournament. The round of golf itself lasted well over six hours but there were no complaints. The weather was simply beautiful. The festivities kicked off at 10:30. Steve Barrett from FMC was our only qualifier for the $10,000 dollar putting contest and just lipped out the final putt. Cres Martinez was the pro on the range and we managed to keep him very busy giving out last minute advice just before people teed off, and as always, participants enjoyed a great barbecue lunch. Out on the course, play was slow but as one recruiter put it, “It was like we were going from one cocktail party to the next with a few holes of golf in-between.”

Rumor has it that several people were incredibly close to winning the cars and the trips, but close only counts in hand grenades, dancing, and karma sutra. The team to beat was the Compaq team; from the get go everyone else was only playing for second, especially since Tiger wasn’t in the field. The Compaq team was on fire, shooting a gross 60, just missing the perfect 13 under by millimeters. The top three teams actually were tied for the low net with scores of 53 and the reverse, highly suspicious, playoff method was used to determine first, second, and third.

Second place was the Entergy team with beloved alums Hans Hubbard (MBA ’00) and Mike Current (MBA ’00) leading the way and third place went to the Shell team lead by Todd Wodraska (‘02), the aspiring young first year. Todd was our only multiple winner as he also claimed the Near Pin honors. The long drive award went to first-time participant Bill Griffin from BMC. The other team of note was the Continental Team who came in “dead last” but probably had the most fun doing so.

Post-dinner festivities started with the Million Dollar Hole in One which was truly a shot in the dark, followed by the annual auction. It just isn’t a tournament until Dr. Ed Williams gets to the mike and discloses his side job as an auctioneer. The major prizes this year included a week stay in Crested Butte: Charlie Bates (MBA ’96)–compliments of Peter Veruki; a trip to the U.S. Open: Charlotte Holmes, (’01); two Tickets to Paradise: David Karohl (’01); and a box of Premium Cuban Cigars: Lester Huang (’01). The evening lasted well past 9:00 p.m. with too many side events to list here. For full results and pictures, go to: www.golfawol.com/oct.htm.
