Dean's Welcome
Gil Whitaker and Maya Houston (MBA '99) JGS Director of Development, accepting the MBA Class of 2001 pledge check from Mike Wieland (MBA '01) Class Gift Chairman.

At the 2001 Jones Graduate School Investiture on May 11, it was with pride and gratitude that I accepted a pledge check in the amount of $275,000 from the graduating MBA class of 2001 as part of the Class Gift Challenge for the capital campaign. I am inspired and impressed by their enthusiasm for the Jones Graduate School and their belief and dedication to our aim to be recognized as a top ten program in the next ten years.

As our Class Gift Challenge gets underway, I am very pleased by the number of alumni who have volunteered to be Class Gift Liaisons. Strong alumni support for this campaign illustrates alumni investment in the future of the Jones Graduate School MBA program. The alumni annual gift fund is another program where alumni give financial assistance through yearly donations to support all of the critical needs of the school, ranging from financial aid to faculty research support. Alumni support for both the capital campaign and annual gift fund is a testament to the Jones Graduate School of far greater value than any external evaluation.

Earlier this spring, I participated in a conference call kicking off the inaugural meeting of another newly formed JGS alumni volunteer group, the Jones Leaders. The Jones Leaders is a volunteer organization established as an extension of the JGSAA Board to further the school’s vision and mission. Key objectives of the Jones Leaders include reconnecting a broader group of alumni to the Jones Graduate School, providing a vehicle to grow the school’s reputation and communicate the school’s message, equipping a stable of volunteers for service projects, and supplying a potential pool for future board members. We have recruited an extraordinary group of alumni to seed this program, alumni who have demonstrated a high level of commitment, participation, and involvement with Jones School activities over the past year. It is my hope that this group continues to expand and that alumni from around the world desire to be involved. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our alumni office at jgsalum@rice.edu or (713)348-6222.

Volunteerism is essential to the success of our MBA program. Without the support of our alumni and friends, we cannot reach the heights to which we aspire. I would like to express my gratitude for the generosity of the many Jones Graduate School alumni and friends who have contributed time, funds, and vision to JGS over this past year. I look forward to your continued support—and thank you for what you have done and what I know you will do.
