As your partner, the Career Management Center assists you in connecting with our students. We provide support throughout the process.

If you are new to the recruiting process, we recommend the following procedures:

  • Select a Week to Interview — After reviewing the recruitment calendar, decide what week works best for your schedule. Contact the CMC to request dates.
  • Schedule a Partio or Presentation — Enhance your company’s visibility by hosting an event on campus, providing an opportunity for students and alumni to network with company representatives.
  • Post a Job on OWL-Careers (Powered by MBAFocus) — This allows you to have access to all of the Jones School students. You can order a Resume Book or have students interested in the position provide resumes for your review.
    • OWL-Careers (Powered by MBAFocus): Recruiter career portal for all on-campus recruiting activity from posting open positions, hosting info sessions, receptions or Partios, conducting on-campus interviews, and purchasing resume books. Job & Resume posting site exclusively for top-tier MBA schools used by our students and alums to search for available position locally and internationally. The CMC utilizes MBAFocus to post experienced hire positions for Alumni and Executive MBAs. National and international companies utilize MBAFocus to post full-time and internship positions.

Who to Recruit

Regardless of the position you want to fill, Rice can connect you with qualified individuals from across our three programs and the Rice MBA alumni network.

Rice MBA Full Time
Full-time students average five years of work experience prior to arriving at Rice. Many of these highly-driven individuals want to change careers. In addition to the comprehensive curriculum, these students spend much of their time participating in hands-on work experiences designed to prepare them for success.

Rice MBA for Professionals
Students in the professional program are also available for recruitment. These students have an average of five years of work experience. Most of these students joined the program to accelerate their current career path and are often available to fill open positions immediately.

Rice MBA for Executives and Rice MBA Alumni
Companies interested in highly experienced individuals may also request more information about our MBA for Executives and Rice MBA alumni from the Career Management Center. The executive program features individuals with an average of 12 years work experience, in roles ranging from manager to vice president to CEO. In addition, many of the school’s alumni maintain a close relationship with Rice and utilize the CMC’s offerings long after graduation.

Students in the full-time program are available for internships after their first year in the program. Because of the strong relationships among the Rice students and faculty, internships raise your company's profile with the entire class.

Internship Hiring FAQ’s:
  • How long should a student’s internship be?
    • Typically, internships last 10 - 12 weeks, depending on the projects administered and completion time required. If you are new to hiring interns, please contact Yolander Albert Smith,, Director of Recruiting and Employer Relations, who can discuss the process with you.
  • Does my company have to pay the intern for their work?
    • At the MBA level, 99% of student internships are paid. Positions do not have to be paid, but, in order to be competitive, we highly recommend it.
  • How do I calculate what I should pay a summer intern?
    • Typically, companies pay a prorated portion (10-12 weeks) of the full time equivalent salary and apply a discount rate of 15-25%. For example, a 12 week internship with an equivalent annual salary of $90,000 and a discount rate of 15% ($75,000) would equal $17,650 for the summer.
    • [ ($90,000 ÷ 52 weeks) x 12 weeks x 85%= $17,650] or $37.66/hr
  • Do international students require sponsorship for a summer internship?
    • No. Your company will not have to pay sponsorship fees or complete sponsorship paperwork to hire an international intern. The student will need to obtain a letter of job offer from the employing company, written on company letterhead indicating:
      • Company name
      • Internship title and brief job description
      • The start and end dates of employment
      • The average number of working hours per week
      • The location of employment (street address, city, state, and zip code)

  • What does a summer intern do?
    • A summer intern will usually work on projects in an already established team to analyze or collect results. An example project for an intern in the energy industry would be helping to lead the due diligence team on an acquisition of an oil and gas company in the Gulf Coast region.
  • Can interns work during the school year for the company at which they interned?
    • 1st year MBAs- no
    • 2nd year MBAs- yes, after they have completed their summer internship


International Immersion
Immersion is an intense introduction to business school life. Before the semester begins, new MBA students take courses in business fundamentals, such as accounting, ethics, strategy, and communication. The case teamwork is designed to prepare new students for the content and workload of the next two years. There’s lots of reading, meeting, and long hours. Staying at McNair Hall until 2am isn’t required to finish the work, but for some, it’s necessary in order to stay on track. “It’s a character-building experience,” says Sean Ferguson, Assistant Dean for Degree Programs.

International Immersion introduces the international students in the incoming class to Houston, the Jones School and each other during a week long course held before the full-time class arrives: The following sessions are offered during International Immersion:

Past Immersions - What our Students Learned
  • David Ohrvahl: David kicked off our immersion events by teaching the incoming class how to think through case interviews and how those techniques can be applied to all interviews. David is the author of the popular case interview guide Crack the Case: How to Conquer your Case Interviews.
  • Downtown Houston Tunnel Tour: This program is designed to introduce first-year, full-time students to the downtown Houston business community with a tunnel history lesson followed by a brief tour and an information session with various industries represented downtown.
  • Rice Culture: A two-hour class on the history of Rice and its culture is taught to students as a welcome activity.

Build Your Presence

No matter how large or small the hiring organization, it is imperative that employers of Jones School talent build brand recognition on campus. Students need to see your company’s engagement at recruiting activities, school functions and student club events. Held every November, mock interviews pair current students with alums and company representatives to practice their interview skills and receive positive and constructive feedback.
This event is designed to:
  • Provide interview practice for our students, as well as receive feedback for improving from their interviewers
  • Provide employers the opportunity to engage with Rice students and promote their brand on campus
  • Give employers an opportunity to view our students in a critical thinking/interview situation
  • Give alums an opportunity to engage with current students at Rice-JGSB and assist them in honing their interviewing skills
Educational Seminars
  • Career Conference Panels - August
    The Annual JGSB Career Conference Day features various panels representing industries such as energy, financial services, consumer goods and consulting. Alumni serve as subject matter experts in providing students with information in the various post-MBA industry and functional career paths available to them.
  • Career Education Days - September
    Employers and alumni will provide information to students about using internships as a pipeline for full-time hiring, negotiating job offers, leveraging alumni contacts and building networks through professional associations.

  • Career Rodeo - Our Spring Networking and Recruitment Fair hosts major Houston companies, as well as entrepreneurial companies, and includes the pre-night networking event at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Volunteer students and corporate recruiters mingle in a relaxed atmosphere while enjoying the show. Jones School students are well positioned for career progression with multiple avenues to secure internship and full time employment. With an optimal geographic location near prestigious professional services firms and a robust entrepreneurial community, the CMC offers numerous opportunities to interface with companies on Fortune’s “100 Top MBA Employers” list.

Diversity Conferences
Four diversity conferences are held throughout the fall: National Black MBA, National Hispanic, National Asian and National Women.

Employment: 8%-10% of the first year class accepts internship employment from these conferences. Those internships have an approximate 90% conversation rate to full time acceptances. On average, another 2% of the second year students secure a position from conferences.

Student Club Diversity

BBSABlack Business Student Association The Black Business Student Association is committed to equipping its members with all the tools needed to become successful business men and women. We are also striving to increase the awareness of Rice University, as well as the Jones School, among minorities and under-represented groups within the Houston community, and with that, increase the number of qualified minority applicants. One way that we are working to achieve these goals is our monthly networking mixers with current students, prospective students, Jones School alums, as well as other business people from the Houston area. We also participate in and host panels and information sessions to further spread the word about business school in general, but especially the program here at Rice.

The Hispanic Business Student Association (HBSA) at Rice University connects current business leaders with the Hispanic leaders of the future. National Association of Women MBAs
NAWMBA National Association of Women MBAs (NAWMBA) focuses on empowering women in business, propelling more women into leadership positions in corporate America, and working to enhance the diversity of the nation’s workforce. In 2011, Rice sent the largest delegation of any US NAWMBA chapter to our national conference in Dallas. As a chapter, NAWMBA at Rice hosts an annual Women in Leadership Conference with over 150 attendees. In addition to this annual programming, we host quarterly speakers from various industries, invite our alumni back to campus for networking events, and mentor our first year student members. In Houston, we are lucky enough to have a NAWMBA professional chapter who opens their events to our membership as well.

We also believe it is important for the club to give back to the community. This year, we partnered with the Multisports Club to raise money and run the Susan G. Komen 5K Race. We also participated in Jones Gives Back Day, sending members to volunteer at a number of organizations including the Nature Discovery Center, The Women’s Home, Dress for Success, and Change Happens. We plan to return to Dress for Success later this year to volunteer as a group.

Asian Business Student Association
The goal of our ABSA is to educate students on business in Asia as well as Asian business professionals and their impact on the world. You don’t need to be Asian to be a member, you just have to have an interest in Asia and its impact on business. In the past we have hosted our annual ABSA Fall conference at Rice University. This past year we were fortunate to have MSNBC anchor Richard Lui as our guest speaker to talk about Taking Charge of Your Career. In the past years we have had management from KPMG come and speak as well. The other large event is the National Association of Asian MBAs Conference which is usually held in September in New York City. This is a not only a great opportunity to learn more about Asia’s impact on business but also network with companies at the career fair and possibly land an internship for the summer. Along with these 2 major events, we host monthly social meetings with food and drinks where we will talk about current business events in Asia and Asian business leaders in the news. Our goal here is to educate students who might be going on either the China or India trips beforehand so that you have a base knowledge of the region before going on your trips. We continue these meetings in the spring and couple it with treks to Chinatown and other areas around town to sample Asian food and visit local Asian businesses. Additionally, there are opportunities for 1st year officer spots in ABSA. This provides you with a head start in contributing to a club and provides added leadership that can be placed on your resume. It will also help with transitioning the club to the incoming officers for the following year.

Global Roots-Local Connections

Local Roots
Rice University and the City of Houston have been creating a community of learning and discovery together for almost 100 years. The Jones School benefits from this partnership and has built strong relationships with Houston businesses. The Rice MBA has grow in reputation and rankings, including the full-time program being ranked 25th in the U.S., according to the Financial Times 2009 Global MBA ranking.
  • As home to more Fortune 500 company headquarters than any other U.S. city except New York, Houston businesses need to attract talent to the region and there’s no better place to fill that need than the Jones School—where 51% of our MBAs come from Texas and over 75% of the last two graduating classes have remained in Texas for employment.
  • The professional program, both weeknight and weekend, appeals to high potential individuals from top companies in the Houston area. Building on their expertise at work and in the classroom, they graduate better equipped to contribute to a business’ bottom line.
  • The Rice Alliance hosts the largest and wealthiest student business plan competition in the world and promotes entrepreneurship as a key focus of Rice University. The school also has a strong partnership with the Houston Angel Network, a non-profit organization that provides its members a forum in which to efficiently evaluate promising early-stage investment opportunities.
  • The Office of Technology Transfer at Rice facilitates the relationship between academia and industry to make the benefits of new discoveries available to the public with a strong focus on environmental, energy, information and biomedical technologies.
Global Connections
In the course, Tech Commercialization, Rice MBA students collaborated with Rice engineering undergrads to create a sustainable commerce model for delivering life-saving technologies in developing countries.

Measuring success in terms of their impact on a global community, 20 Rice MBA students from the class helped Rwandan entrepreneurs launch businesses using bio-medical products, such as the low-cost incubator and lab-in-a-backpack. The products were introduced to and then created by Rwandans for Rwandans, helping a country governed mostly by women move away from receiving aid to commercializing technology as a means of building a sustainable economy and addressing global health issues.

International Trips
Every year students from all three Rice MBA programs may choose to study abroad. Arranged during breaks, the different options do not conflict with class schedules.

In keeping with the Jones School’s mission of developing principled, innovative thought leaders in global communities, trips to China, Latin America, and India remain strategic destinations for our students with global business concentrations and for those taking courses on emerging markets.

Itineraries include visits to corporate offices, U.S. embassies, and plant sites, as well as alumni and prospective student events. On the China trip, students take mini-courses at Rice’s partner universities, Tongji University and Tsinghua University. Students make business contacts and learn firsthand about the economic situations in the host country.

Past trips have included Mexico City, Beijing, Shanghai and Dubai.

Recruiting International Students

The global reach of our graduates is impressive as many are from outside the United States. U.S. law allows several ways for employers to hire international graduates for both full-time and internship positions.

Full-Time Positions

Optional Practical Training
F-1 visa holders are eligible for up to 12 months of employment after graduation with a possible extension to H-1B visa approval. J-1 visa may be eligible for up to 18 months of training.*

Timing and Cost
  • F-1 graduates can begin working immediately upon receipt of the work authorization card.
  • No cost to employer. Student pays a nominal filing fee to CIS to receive a work authorization card.
H-1B Visas
These visas are available to foreign nationals who a) have at least a U.S. Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent, and b) will be working in a job that requires at least a Bachelor’s degree.

Employer Obligations
  • Post notice for ten days stating that you are hiring an H-1B worker.
  • No need to advertise position or determine if U.S. workers are available to fill the position.
Timing and Cost
  • Processing times vary depending on the work location. Premium processing guarantees processing in 15 days.
  • Typical filing fees range from $690 to $2190. The premium processing filing fee is $1000.
H-1B Cap
  • There are 65,000 new H-1B approvals each year (October 1 through September 30). Graduates with U.S. advanced degrees have special allocation of an additional 20,000 H-1Bs.
Exceptions to the cap
  • Universities; non-profits affiliated with universities; research non-profits; H-1B extensions and transfers. Citizens of Australia, Chile and Singapore have a special allocation of H-1Bs.
Internship Positions

Curricular Practical Training
F-1 and J-1* visa holders can work and be paid through an internship. Approval is processed through the school. The employer must provide the following documents:

Fabiola Currarino, Executive Director
Fabiola Currarino is the Executive Director of the Career Management Center at the Jones School. Fabiola joined our office in December of 2012 from MIT Sloan School of Management, where she was an Associate Director of MBA Career Education and Advising. Before moving into Higher Education, Fabiola spent over four years in the Healthcare industry doing Business Development in Europe for a US based Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Start-up (Minrad International Inc.). Prior to that, Fabiola worked for two years at a Peruvian IT Integrator Start-up (Systems Support), managing their entire portfolio of products and services. She worked for five years at IBM Peru and Bolivia on Marketing, Sales and Business Development. Fabiola holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a B.S in Management from Universidad Catolica in Peru.
LaShaunda Johnson, Office Coordinator
LaShaunda Johnson is the Office Coordinator in the Jones Graduate School of Business Career Management Center at Rice University. She provides administrative support to the CMC and support on special projects as well as departmental administration and monitoring of the budget. LaShaunda comes from a corporate HR background of more than 13 years with Verizon Communications. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Resource Management and is a current member of the SRHM.

Marie Bergeron, Director of Career Development (EMBA and JGSB Alumni)
Marie Bergeron serves as the Director of Career Development for experienced hires in the Jones Graduate School of Business. She has enjoyed a long career in academia and career management consulting, including 25+ years in the areas of executive coaching, outplacement, entrepreneurship, and internal corporate career development. Ms. Bergeron’s prior experience as a Career Consultant included engagements as an Executive Coach and in Strategy Process Facilitation, as an independent and as employee/contractor for large human resource consulting firms whose corporate clients are among Fortune 100 companies. Marie holds Fellow Practitioner status as a Certified Career Management Professional through ICCI and is certified in the MBTI and CareerLeader. She is active in professional activities and is Professional Development Officer of the Houston Chapter of NSHMBA and serves as ex oficio Board Member for the GHWCC-Greater Houston Women’s Chamber of Commerce. Marie is also a member of the HBS Club, HACE, TiE, United Nations Association (UNA), MBACSC and the Asian Society. She holds a BS and an MS in Education and Counseling from Louisiana State University, as well as an MBA from the Harvard Business School.
Sue Hochman, Associate Director (MBA Full-Time and MBA-P)
Sue Hochman is an Assistant Director in Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business Career Management Center. Sue is the instructor for the online career services course, The Introduction to Career Management, designed for Professional MBA students. In that role, she works with students on career assessment, resume and cover letter development, and research and networking skills. Additionally, Sue works with the marketing department to develop collateral materials for the CMC. Prior to joining the Jones School team, Sue was an active community volunteer, and worked in marketing and advertising for Bozell & Jacobs Ad Agency, Seven-Up Bottling Company of Houston, and KKBQ radio. Sue has a BS in Advertising from the University of Texas in Austin, and a BBA in Marketing from Texas A&M University.
Tiffany Stott, Associate Director (MBA Full-Time and MBA-P)
Tiffany Stott develops and implements instructional programming related to career development and the job search. Her goal is to assist MBA students in making informed career decisions and to prepare them for professional advancement. She provided individual counseling and assessment interpretation to Rice undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, and alumni in her previous role at Rice University’s Center for Career Development. She also managed the student peer career advising group and their student blog. Stott is returning to the Jones Graduate School of Business where she started in career services and helped to develop the original online career course, Introduction to Career Management. Stott has a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a master's degree in Counselor Education with an emphasis in higher education, both from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Texas and is certified in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Strong Interest Inventory assessments.
LaTonya Tichavsky, Associate Director (MBA Full-Time and MBA-P)
LaTonya Tichavsky is as an Associate Director in the Career Management Center. Her role includes providing coaching to full-time students regarding their career development and employment search. Before joining the Jones school, LaTonya spent over 15 years in Corporate Human Resources in the areas of recruiting, project and performance management. In her most recent role as the US University Relations Manager at BP America, she managed the campus relations program and a team of advisors to hire business, engineering and geoscience graduates. Prior to that, she worked in the Talent Acquisition team at Dell where she was responsible for hiring primarily MBA students into Global Operations, Product Group, Corporate Services, Marketing and Sales. Prior to joining Dell, LaTonya worked in variety of HR roles at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas, Texas and New York, New York. She began her career at PwC as an IT Management Consultant in the Energy industry. LaTonya holds a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Texas A&M University. She is active in several charitable organizations, including the Junior League, Star of Hope, AIDS Foundation, Dress for Success and the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Shannon Franklin-Hightower, Assistant Director (MBA Full-Time and MBA-P)
Shannon Hightower is an Assistant Director in the Career Management Center in the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University. She has been with the Jones School since 2006, previously working as a recruiting coordinator where she handled recruiting schedules for full time employment and internships. Her strong relationship development with employers and the students prompted her current role as Assistant Director which includes advising students with their career development, as well as developing and implementing programs in the areas of interviewing and resume writing. Prior to joining the CMC, Shannon had a career in healthcare administration. She holds a BS in Communication Sciences from Texas Woman’s University.

Yolander Albert Smith, Director of Employer Relations
Yolander Albert Smith serves as the Director of Recruiting and Employer Relations in the Jones Graduate School of Business. She is a graduate of Southern University and Georgia State University. Her professional background spans from computer science to human resources to career counseling. She began her career at Procter and Gamble where she was a Systems Analyst. Following this assignment she became a career counselor for INROADS, Inc. where she spent 7 years and was Operations Manager for the Atlanta office before pursuing an HR career at Wachovia Bank. There she worked full-time and completed a Masters in Human Resource Development from Georgia State. Upon completion of her degree, she joined Duke University as the Associate Director for Employer Relations, responsible for all campus recruiting and corporate sponsorship activity for the undergraduate career center. She is presently the Associate Director of Employer Relations at the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University, coordinating all recruiting and corporate relationships for the Career Management Center, and is a graduate of Leadership Houston.
Joe Soto, Associate Director of Recruiting
Joe Soto serves as the Assistant Director of Recruiting in the Employer Relations team in the Graduate School of Business. He has been with the Jones School since 2006 previously working as an Assistant Director in the MBA for Executives and Full-time MBA programs. His current role includes managing all aspects of On Campus Recruiting and engaging with corporate partners. Additionally Joe is the staff sponsor for the Veterans in Business Association and the Golf Club. Joe received a Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Texas at El Paso and is a member of the National Society of Hispanic MBAs.
Abimbola (Abi) Mobuse, Recruiting Coordinator

Abimbola (Abi) Mobuse is a Recruiting Coordinator at the Career Management Center of the Jones Graduate School of Business. She joined the team in December 2014 from the Office of Financial Services. Prior to joining Rice University, two and a half years ago, Abimbola has had diverse experience working in various HR capacities with global education management organizations (PFL Group International and Touche Limited.), based in Nigeria, her home country, for close to 10 years. During this time, she built constructive relationships with, and effectively supported Campus Development Managers and teams, from notable universities in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Dubai and Canada. Her career started at Shell Nigeria, where she served as Public Affairs and Community Relations Advisor, providing career and life guidance to high school students in disadvantaged rural communities. In her new role with the CMC, she’ll be working with our corporate recruiting partners in helping them engage with our students. Abimbola earned a Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Lagos, Nigeria.
