Bio Statement:
Steven J. Maranville is a Visiting Associate Professor of Management at Rice University’s Jessie H. Jones Graduate School of Management. Professor Maranville teaches Competitive Strategy in the Full-time M.B.A. Program, Strategy Formulation & Implementation in the M.B.A. for Executives Program, and Entrepreneurial Management for Scientists and Engineers in the Professional Masters Program.
Professor Maranville received his B.A. in Fine Arts & Communications (Honors) and an M.B.A. (Distinction) from Brigham Young University. He earned his Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Utah.
Professor Maranville’s teaching philosophy embraces an active-learning methodology. His teaching objective is to prepare students for successful careers as General Managers. The practice of General Management is an active process of opportunity recognition and problem solving. Consequently, his philosophy asserts, to be effective, the experience of management education must be as equally active as the practice of management itself.
Studying in the field of Strategic Management, Professor Maranville’s research agenda addresses how organizations gain competitive advantage. Viewing organizations as adaptive entities, he uses the lens of Organizational Learning Theory to examine the attributes that lead to organizational success or failure. The premise of his research contends that those organizations learning the fastest and the most gain competitive advantage.
Actively involved in the business community, Professor Maranville provides management advisory services and serves on boards of directors. Also actively engaged in professional associations, Professor Maranville is a member of the Academy of Management where he is Chair of the Case Method Research & Teaching Committee for the Management Education & Development Division.
The recipient of many academic and professional honors, Professor Maranville is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma—the academic honor society for Business Schools accredited by AACSB-International—and Phi Kappa Phi—the academic honor society for Interdisciplinary Studies. Professor Maranville has been awarded recognitions by his professional colleagues for Teaching Excellence, Student Mentoring, and Professional Service. Most recently, he was honored by the Federation of Business Disciplines with the Outstanding Educator Award.
