In 2003, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business. In 2004, Currall received Stanford University's Price Foundation Innovative Entrepreneurship Educator Award, selected by the Stanford University Technology Ventures Program. In 2005, he won the Ernst & Young's Entrepreneur of the Year Award® (Supporter of Entrepreneurship category, Gulf Coast-Houston region).
Currall has been a grantee on $13,689,942 in research funding including four grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and one from the National Center for the Educational Quality of the Workforce (U.S. Department of Education). In 2004-2006 he is leading an NSF-funded study of the management of new technology in 20 NSF-funded engineering research centers around the country. In 2001 he was senior personnel on the NSF-funded Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center for Biological and Environmental Nanotechnology at Rice. He is a member of the editorial review boards of the Journal of Organizational Behavior, Academy of Management Executive, and Group and Organization Management. In 2002, he received the Best Theory Paper award from the International Association of Conflict Management. His research has been published in, for example, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Organization Science, Personnel Psychology, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Human Relations, Journal of International Business Studies, and International Journal of Conflict Management.
Currall is Founding Director of the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, which is a university center that is a partnership of the Schools of Engineering, Management and Natural Sciences. Since its inception in 1999, the Rice Alliance has assisted in the launch of over 160 new technology start-up companies, which have raised in excess of $200 million in equity capital. Through its educational events, the Alliance has hosted 12,000 individuals and currently has 11,000 subscribers to its email Digest. The Alliance has attracted $4.5 million in external funding (donations or pledges).
He is a member of the boards of BioHouston, the Houston Technology Center, Leadership in Medicine, Inc., and Nanotechnology Foundation of Texas. Currall has been quoted in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Economist (UK), USA Today, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, Business Week magazine, Corporate Board Member and other media outlets such as the Nightly Business Report on Public Broadcasting System television.
