William H. Glick

William H. Glick

Dean and H. Joe Nelson III Professor of Management (Organizational Behavior)

McNair Hall, Room 210 - E

William (Bill) H. Glick, Ph.D., H. Joe Nelson III Professor of Management, has served as dean of the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business since July 2005. While at Rice University, Dr. Glick pursued a successful growth for excellence strategy.  During this period, Dr. Glick has supported significant curriculum revisions in existing programs and launched five new programs. He also led increases in the school’s engagement with the corporate and business community. Broad community support helped the school develop and complete a $65,000,000 capital campaign focused on scholarships, faculty and programs.

Total enrollments are up more than 90 percent, admission standards are at (or near) record levels, and all three Rice MBA programs are leaders in terms of percentages of women and underrepresented minorities. Improvements in all programs have been widely recognized in major publications.

The full-time Rice MBA program set the all-time record for improving the overall rankings across three major outlets, moving further than any other school to reach the top 25. The Rice MBA is the only full-time program to ever rise from below top 40 to top 25 in the U.S. across the three most important global rankings. And Rice accomplished this climb to excellence in just a decade — from 2006 to 2016: Bloomberg Businessweek, from unranked to No. 19; U.S. News, from No. 44 to No. 25; Financial Times, from No. 41 to No. 24 (in the U.S.). Rice is also the only school to ever reach top 20 in Businessweek without being ranked by either Businessweek or U.S. News prior to 1999. Rice gained more in the sum of those publications’ rankings than any other school from 2006 to 2016.

As a prolific scholar in top management journals, Dr. Glick was inducted as one of 33 charter members of the Academy of Management's Journals Hall of Fame. He was also named as one of the top 100 authors in management based on the numbers of citations to their research. His primary teaching and research are in the areas of organizational behavior and strategy.

Dr. Glick received his Ph.D. in business administration from the University of California-Berkeley in 1981 and his A.B. in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1975. His first faculty appointment was at the University of Texas at Austin where he became Director of the Business Honors Program. He also served as the chair of the Department of Management at Arizona State University and a visiting professor at INSEAD.

He currently serves: as Chair of the board of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB), the global association of top business schools; on the Leadership Circle for Vision 2020, a national organization dedicated to gender equality; on the Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star Advisory Board; and on the board of Panton, Inc., a rapidly growing firm offering a search oriented, cloud-based information platform for information-rich industries including casualty insurance, trucking, and mid-stream oil & gas.
