How can you join the program?
Alumni Mentors (Click here to register): NOTE: Alumni must re-register every year if they wish to continue as a mentor.
- Alumni will be selected by the administration. Houston area mentors are preferred in order to facilitate "face-time" with mentees
- Preferences can be expressed, such as gender, age, ethnicity, industry experience, academic strengths
Student Mentees (Click here to register):
- Apply to participate in the program
- Express preference for mentor type
Mission:
To cultivate a deeper connection and an engaging forum between alumni and students through the sharing of professional and life experience
Structure and Expectations:
- Depending on the number of students/alumni interested in the program, there may be more than one student per alum
- Meetings are expected to occur monthly, with expectation that mentors and mentees will spend at least one hour per month together
- Meetings or gatherings should be structured collaboratively by the mentor and the mentee
- Mentors and Mentees are expected to attend the opening and closing events at the Jones School
- Alumni Relations Office will serve as advisors for the program - participants are "owners"
- Feedback/evaluation surveys will be distributed in May 2012
- Work together to set expectations
- Create a relationship which is based on mutual trust and respect
- Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in the relationship
For Mentees:
- Enhance and influence your career strategy
- Deepen your knowledge of an industry or job function, including trends
- Seek advice and insight from a real world professional
- Receive and accept advice and feedback constructively
- Sharpen listening skills
- Enhance professional effectiveness
- Gain skill in networking
- Cultivate a deeper connection between the Jones School and mentor
- Express appreciation to your mentor regularly
For Mentors:
- Communicate your expectations of the mentee clearly
- Create an environment of open communication and active listening
- Share knowledge about your education, career path, successes and failures and what your experience has taught you
- Look for opportunities that your mentee should explore and encourage her/him to explore them
- Assist your mentee in conducting successful networking
- Gain experience in coaching and advising
- Deepen knowledge of the current students, school community and academic programs
- Increase the value of your Rice MBA by investing in future alumni
